Beyond (Non)-Instrumentalization: Migration and Dignity within a Kantian Framework

Abstract This article offers a Kantian account of dignity violations in the context contemporary migration to western states. It considers three major issues: “modern slavery,” statutory detention, and lack rights engage economic activity. While most accounts emphasize treating people as “mere means,” we point out that this does not capture central issue: “hostile environment” so many migrants face. The first part briefly sets violations. second highlights two key differences between modern slavery its historical forebears. emphasizes interpersonal rather than institutional character slavery, distinguishes trafficking from smuggling. third argues who formal remain work face exclusions violate human dignity. Policies aim discourage restrict immigration demean people’s status ends themselves. Moreover, they do by actively denying opportunities act means for others.
